The land here is less hilly than that in the east, around the Bull Run Mountains. The land in the southern portion of the AVA gradually gains in elevation from south-east to south-west, toward the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Elevations within the AVA range from 220ft (67m) along the Potomac River to 1470ft (450m) at the peak of Naked Mountain, in the AVA's south-western corner. The terrain around Middleburg is made up largely of rolling hills, woodland and creeks. To the east are the Catoctin and Bull Run Mountains. To the west lie the Blue Ridge Mountains. The AVA is marked at its northern limit by the Potomac River and on its three other sides by mountains. Washington himself is honored in one of Virginia's other wine-growing areas, the lengthily titled Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace AVA. This small town was established in 1787 by Virginia statesman John Leven Powell, who purchased the land (at $2.50 per acre) from Joseph Chinn, a first cousin of George Washington. Some of the area's most successful wines have been recognized on the international stage, winning medals at United States- and United Kingdom-based wine competitions.Īt the heart of the AVA is the town of Middleburg itself, located roughly 40 miles (60km) west of downtown Washington DC. The white wines are based mostly on Viognier, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The Bordeaux varieties Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Merlot are all to be found in the vineyards here, and Syrah is also planted.

The wines produced in and around Middleburg are largely varietals, but blends (notably red Bordeaux-style blends) also feature in the local wine portfolio. As of 2018 the number of wineries had doubled.

At its inauguration in late 2012, the AVA was home to 230 acres (93ha) of commercial vineyards and 15 wineries. The application process began in 2006, shortly after Boxwood Estate was established. The petition to establish the Middleburg Virginia AVA was spearheaded by Rachel Martin of the Boxwood Estate Winery. Middleburg Virginia is the newest AVA in the American state of Virginia, covering roughly 200 square miles in the north-east of the "Old Dominion".
